Day Laborers Give Back! Launch National Service Campaign with Events Across the Country!

Echando Raices
On June 18, a group of 24 Portland day laborers went out to the streets to clean the neighboring area in which is located the new Hire Site, as part of the national campaign “Growing Roots.” This community service work has been implemented for years by day laborers as they wait for employers, not as a strategy, but as a daily job – as an integral part of their existence. The community participation is understood in the organized day laborer community as a process of integration into the community and as an assumption of individual and collective responsibilities.

It is the cultivation of the understanding of peace and peaceful coexistence. It is a gesture of goodness and an answer to hate and hostility. It is also a call to participate in the decisive processes of a civil society.
