Voz Workers’ Rights Education Project (“Voz”) is a worker-led organization that empowers diverse day laborers and immigrants to improve their working condition and protect civil rights through leadership development, organizing, education and economic opportunity.

POSITION: Internal Organizer

SUPERVISOR: Executive Director

HOURS: 40 hours a week

BENEFITS: Health/Dental, Paid Sick Time, Vacation, Family Leave

SALARY: $18.94/hour

Summary of the Position:
The organizer has the work of creating and implementing strategies for promoting leadership development among day laborers, using the methodology of Popular Education.

Main Responsibilities:

  1. Support the Day Laborer Committee
  • Facilitate the Day Laborer Committee’s growth and development.
  • Facilitate the incorporation of new members using democratic processes.
  1. Coordinate the Leadership School Program:
  • Organize the Leadership School, based on Popular Education principles.
  • Organize the Leadership Retreat every year.
  • Create Curriculum for Leadership School in partnership with day laborers.
  1. Organize the day laborers looking for work on the corners:
  • Visit the day laborers on the corners to discuss and respond to problems that affect them, especially wage theft.
  • Involve the day laborers on the corners in leadership events and activities.
  1. Develop workshops with the day laborers about civil, human, labor, immigrant and environmental justice rights:
  • Organize workshops on topics requested by the day laborers, and involve the day laborer leaders in the teaching of the workshops.
  • Support the Worker Center Director in the implementation of health and safety trainings and green jobs trainings.
  1. Promote leadership among the day laborers through culture and sports:
  • Coordinate the soccer team.
  • Coordinate the art and music programs.
  • Coordinate Cultural events such as the Dia de Muertos and Virgen de Guadalupe event on the 12th of December or any other cultural events that day laborers would like to celebrate.
  1. Involve the day laborers as representatives of the organization in the community:
  • Recruit day laborers to give speeches at public events that support and align with day laborers struggles.
  • Recruit day laborers to testify before public officials.
  1. Mobilize the day laborers to participate in the surveillance and security of the MLK Worker Center and participate in simulations on how to respond to threats and attacks that affect their interests.
  2. Attend Orientations for new day laborer members.
  3. Collaborate with Voz staff to improve the Worker Center facilities and economic opportunities for day laborers.
  4. Keep track of the level of participation and leadership of each laborer.
  5. Participate in a weekly staff meetings and retreats and turn in reports as needed
  6. Organize a Monthly Women’s Leadership Cohort meeting.
  7. Mobilize day laborers to participate in direct actions for wage theft and other campaigns relevant to defending their rights.



  • Community organizing experience
  • Popular education training experience
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Experience working with vulnerable low-income and immigrant populations
  • Knowledge of and commitment to immigrants’ rights, workers’ rights and social justice
  • Strong communication skills
  • Computer literate
  • Dedication and ability to work on a flexible schedule, including some weekends, and some nights
  • Ability to collaborate and work cooperatively
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to multi-task
