On June 14th, we will come together for Voz’s 2017 Annual Dinner celebrating the lives of the diverse day laborers and immigrants who find employment through the MLK Jr. Workers Center and raising our voice in opposition to the many threats facing our community at this time. The event, which attracted over 250 supporters last year, is hosted by Voz staff, board, and volunteers, and attendees come from ally organizations, church groups, and the large community of individuals supporting Voz’s work. The dinner is catered by ¿Por Que No?, with live music, incredible raffle prizes, and a short program with community speakers sharing our recent successes and current efforts working with day laborers and immigrants in the Portland community. With this year’s goal of $30,000 we hope to continue our efforts to unite and support one of the most vital groups of Portland, the workers.

Every year the money we raise has been donated to advance:Annual Dinner Top view

  • Voz’s Workforce Development Program, paving a path for day laborers to attain better-paying jobs by providing temporary employment, job-skill trainings, safety trainings, English classes, and computer classes.
  • Voz’s Wage Theft Program, reclaiming stolen wages for day laborers and immigrant workers through legal or direct action while working to improve wage theft laws in Oregon. Since 2000, we’ve successfully reclaimed over $600,000 in stolen wages.
  • Voz’s Building the Dream Campaign, fighting to establish a permanent structure at the Martin Luther King Jr. Worker Center to provide shelter and basic resources for the day laborers.
  • Organizing and Advocacy, mobilizing day laborers and allies to create a community defense team for any attacks in this difficult political climate, provide a legal observer team to document any civil rights abuses, and to push our politicians to create concrete policies keeping ICE out of Portland and make a safe environment for the immigrant community.
