Voz’s 1st International Women’s Day

This is the first year that Voz has celebrated International Women’s Day (IWD). IWD was originally called International Working Women’s Day, and it was used to celebrate women’s economic, political and social achievements. The idea to celebrate IWD at Voz came from this year’s leadership retreat that took place March 1st-3rd. This is an annual retreat for newly elected Day Laborer Committee members and other leaders to build their leadership skills. The committee members were glad to begin planning for the event to bring their idea to reality.

At the celebration each woman received a carnation and a handmade card with a poem. The 40+ attendees heard speeches and music, celebrating the important role females have played at Voz and at the MLK Jr. Worker Center. Day laborers shared stories about the important women in their lives.

Our hope is that this will be the first annual of many International Women’s Day Celebrations at Voz that honor the women in our communities.
