This summer, Voz organized Raíces de Resiliencia: Voces de la Tierra, a community gathering rooted in healing, art, and our shared connection to the land. The event took place at Cathedral Park, a meaningful location where many day laborers have worked over the years. This time, Voz transformed that space into one of rest, reflection, and celebration.
Our goal was simple yet powerful: to give day laborers and domestic workers, most of whom are immigrants, a space to connect with nature beyond the context of work. Through culture, creativity, and community care, we cultivated well-being and belonging.
More than 30 workers and families came together to share music, dance, food, and stories. Local artist Yanely Rivas guided a hands-on printmaking activity where participants learned block carving and created their own rubber stamps inspired by nature and identity. Members also enjoyed a live music performance from a fellow worker’s band and a delicious meal prepared by two Voz members. Each participant received a healing kit filled with plants, teas, cooling towels, first aid supplies, and other items chosen to support physical and emotional care.
As part of the project, Voz also interviewed ten workers to hear their stories of resilience and healing. A few of these interviews are featured in a bilingual journal that was created collaboratively with worker input, reflecting the community’s voices, experiences, and wisdom.
Raíces de Resiliencia reminded us that healing is not a luxury. It is a collective act of resistance and care. In a world that often values workers only for their labor, this project created space for joy, creativity, and cultural pride. More than 40 people took part directly, and their stories continue to ripple across families and communities, strengthening resilience from the ground up.
Because when we root ourselves in community, we grow stronger together. 🌱
