Meet Augustine Laima Bangura, alias Dem Dad, from Sierra Leone, West Africa. After arriving in November 2023 he was introduced to Voz and since then, has been a regular at Voz building strong relationships within the community.
In Sierra Leone, Augustine was a civil engineer, and he has gladly taken on various types of work, including landscaping, construction, and moving. Augustine’s work ethic and dedication quickly earned him a reputation among employers, many of whom now call him directly for repeat work.
Thanks to these economic opportunities, Augustine has been able to pay his rent, secure an apartment, and send money back home to his family—things that seemed out of reach before he joined Voz.
One of his most memorable experiences with Voz was traveling to Seattle for NDLON's PNW Regional Assembly. As his first trip outside Oregon, it allowed him to learn about Voz’s connections with other worker centers and the coalitions we’re involved in that advocate for immigrant and worker justice.
Augustine’s message for the community: “Voz is here for everyone. If you need skilled laborers, we’re ready to help. And for those who want to donate, know that your support goes a long way, as Voz never asks for anything in return. Together, we build a stronger community.”
