Meet Máximo, the President of the Day Laborer Committee (DLC) at Voz. Originally from Cuba, Máximo arrived in the United States 20 years ago and joined Voz in 2013 through a friend. Since then, he’s worked in a variety of jobs, including demolition, painting, moving, and landscaping, and he takes pride in all types of work.
Máximo joined the DLC to represent his fellow day laborers and be their voice. His mission is to ensure that they can freely express their concerns, questions, and feedback. Voz has profoundly impacted his life, providing him with employment opportunities, economic support, food, and health care. He considers Voz his second home.
Máximo shares, “Aquí los jornaleros encuentran una ayuda, una guía. Es una oportunidad para la gente superarse.” (Here, day laborers find help, guidance, and an opportunity to better themselves.)
He wants the community to know that Voz is a welcoming, inclusive space, and that everyone is welcome regardless of nationality, race, political ideology, or sexual orientation.
